Doubles Nights are a novel way for both curlers with limited experience and advanced experience to come out and learn about the discipline of Doubles Curling.
About Doubles Nights
Doubles Nights take place once a month on a Saturday night. These started as a way to introduce existing curlers to a different discipline of the sport. Doubles - unlike regular curling - has only two people to a team, making it ideal for anyone without a full four person team. At the competitive level, Doubles is mixed, meaning one male and one female player per team. However, at the Avonair, we don't what combination of players are on your team! This event is great for couples, friends, families, and many other combinations of pairs.
If you have never played doubles before - that's exactly the point! Your event fee includes a short lesson on the differences between Doubles Curling and Four Person Curling. There will also be instructors out on the ice - potentially curling with and against you - so they will be available for questions and assistance as needed.
Please note: These events are not meant to be Learn to Curl Events. It is strongly recommended that all participants have at least a basic curling knowledge to enjoy learning about Doubles Curling. If you are looking for a formal Introduction to Curling Lesson, please check out our Single Day Lessons or our Multi Session Learn to Curl Program.
Your fee for the evening will include the following:

What do I Need to Bring?
Yourself and a partner!
If you have curling equipment, please bring that along. If you do not have curling equipment, that is not a dealbreaker!
The Avonair has grippers, sliders, stabilizers, and brooms available to anyone who needs them.
Otherwise, all players are responsible for bringing clean, indoor shoes and appropriate clothing (loose, stretchy pants and layers). Helmets are not required, but participants are encouraged to consider helmet use if not completely comfortable on the ice.
Please note: Clean shoes are mandatory. It is extremely important that shoes worn outside in the snow, water, and gravel not come on to our curling ice. If a participant comes to the event with inappropriate shoes, they will not be permitted to participate on the ice.
Who Can Join?
Anyone! Anyone and everyone!
Although this program is designed for participants 18 years and older, that does not mean that someone younger is unable to participate. All we ask is that if our younger participants are 12 years or younger, there is a 1:1 parent to child ratio. As well, all participants under the age of 12 are required to wear a helmet at all times on the ice.
Again, please note: These events are not meant to be curling lessons. It is strongly recommended that all participants have at least a basic understanding of curling to get the most out of these events. If you are looking for more formal instruction please see our Single Day Lessons or our Multi Week Learn to Curl Program.
Curling has also made many improvements in the last couple of decades to broaden the accessibility of the sport. If crouching down and sliding seems impossible, stick curling is an option. This keeps the participant upright at all times. The Avonair Curling Club is also the home club to the Edmonton Rocks Wheelchair League.
